Degas's energy and his desire to capture ephemeral movement in its countless nuances, resulted in a prodigious series of paintings, pastels, monotypes, drawings and finally wax sculptures. Outside of portraits, it is almost impossible to find a Degas where movement and action are not inherent, yet his method was the exact opposite of the Impressionists. He did not try to capture the moment with a quick brushstroke, there is nothing impulsive about Degas. Everything is studied, planned and executed in the workshop under controlled conditions.
Degas experimented with new techniques and revitalized neglected mediums such as pastel, gouache and even the tempera (used to paint landscapes) in an attempt to transcend the limitations of oil painting. Abandoning oil allows him to paint quickly on a paper backing that can stretch to infinity by gluing separate pieces of paper as needed. In another register, he experimented with alternatives to traditional golden frames. After having revolutionized the framing of subjects within the composition, he now addresses the immediate environment of the painting, up to the decor and lighting of the exhibition room themselves.
In his later years, his eyesight, which had bothered him all his life, began to falter. However, he continued until his death, turning more and more to sculpture for expression and producing, ironically, shortly before his death, his most impressionistic and colorful pastel works.
Degas would constantly experiment with unusual techniques. Sometimes he mixed his pastel so strongly with liquid fixer that it melted into a sort of paste. He would draw a charcoal drawing and use layers of pastel to cover part of it; will combine pastels and oil in a single work; Pressed a heavily pigmented charcoal design to transfer excess pigment to a new sheet to make a reverse print. In his monotypes, he uses etching (nitric acid) in a new way: he inks the unengraved plate and draws with a brush in this layer of ink; then he removes all the ink in places to obtain strong contrasts of light and dark or pictorial effects. Thus, in various ways, Degas will succeed in achieving a wealth of surface effects.
